Soft paws sneaking in:
warm bed, titbits, lots of fuss.
All in a day’s work.
The grass blades are rapiers
doused in mercury.
I choose to walk with dragon-scale shoes
to that soft mound
covering the stone I’ve looked on so often.
I remember you next to me, bright eyes.
Remember the heat of your breath on my neck,
the charge to your fur that would crack blue
if I wasn’t careful,
scolding my fingers.
The thud of paws still vibrates through the ground
with every step away
I take.
Her tail flicks as she saunters past,
nose aloft and green eyes
avoiding my gaze.
The delicate scent of catnip
I purposefully misted on her bedding
gets only a single sniff,
and the square fishy treats
no more than a cautionary lick.
I suppose that’s all I deserve,
having been away
for two whole days.
Lilac fury, fierce eyes,
delicate wings, sweet trilling lies.
Swift as wind, ever cunning,
chase away, send them running.
Feathered face, iron claws,
needle beak, never pause.
